Top 3 + 1 Best Things To Do In Caye Caulker - Belize

Caye Caulker is a tiny island that belongs to the country of Belize. I'm not exaggerating when I call it a tiny island. You can easily walk the width of the island in about 10 minutes or walk its length in approximately one hour.

However, aren't you tired of big cities, long flights, long bus journeys, etc.? This is a place where within days you'll greet your next-door neighbour with a big smile and may even be invited for a beer with the locals.

1 - Checking The Split

The first best thing to do in Caye Caulker would be relaxing at the beach you'd think, but it isn't that. The reason why it isn't that it's purely because there are no real 'beaches' on the island. The only beaches where you could possibly enjoy the tranquil waters of the Caribbean Sea are also the places where the locals have built many of the piers where they dock their boats, so not really ideal for swimming/relaxation. There are also man-made beaches where mangrove forests used to be. Now you may not know this but mangroves tend to grow where there's usually a lot of mud. So unless you want to dig your toes in the mud, I would avoid these man-made beaches. But worry not, Caye Caulker has got you covered. May we introduce you to the Split?

The Split was formed in 1961 when Hurricane Hattie hit, splitting Caye Caulker in two. This is the most popular place on the island to chill, snorkel, drink some amazing cocktails and hang out.

2 - Having Some Freshly Caught Fish Or Lobster At Maggie's

There are plenty of food options available on the island but not many of them are as wallet-friendly or authentic as the food at Maggie's. The place is right on the water and it's not on the main road which gives it a kind of secluded feeling. Maggie's is the sort of place you only tell your closest friends back home about as it's truly a gem and you'd only entrust such a secret to people you hold dear. The menu isn't vast but everything is fresh. There are some vegetarian options but the star here is the freshly caught fish or lobster when in season.

3 - Snorkelling The Barrier Reef

Surrounded by the spectacular Belize Barrier Reef which is the second-longest in the world, Caye Caulker is the perfect base for your underwater adventures. Trips from the island to the nearby barrier reef are not cheap but are definitely worth it. If you have the budget for it, you could also dive in the famous Great Blue Hole. Another DIY option is to grab your own snorkelling gear, and just try to spot some marine around the island, you'll surely spot some manta rays, starfish, and different tropical fish.

4 - Having Breakfast At Errolyn's House Of Fry Jacks

If breakfast is the most important meal of the day for you, then this is your place. This is surely a breakfast of champions, and a tasty one too. Fry Jacks are a traditional dish in the Belizean cuisine. They are deep-fried dough pieces served as a breakfast and can be shaped like circles or triangles. You can usually choose from a variety of fillings such as scrambled eggs, bacon, ham, cheese, fresh vegetables, etc. They are both cheap and tasty, so don't forget to grab one or two when you're on the island.
